As we continue to settle into October, we’re also taking a look back at what held interest in September across the North American public library space. Turns out, it was a lot of what held interest in the previous month, with a few exceptions. The number one spot, for instance, was previously held by Kristin Hannah’s The Women, but is now occupied by Emily Henry’s Great Big Beautiful Life. There are other spots throughout the list where certain books have moved up the list and others down. And, the books listed from #16 to #20 have mostly been replaced by books that weren’t on the list last month. Overall, though, the list mostly seems to mirror bestseller lists, which are highly driven by budget sizes. For more diverse selections, make sure to look at this roundup of notable BIPOC books for October. They range from the dystopian and National Book Award-nominated A Guardian and a Thief by Megha Majumdar to the similarly award-nominated artist-trying-to-make-it-in-New-York-City story Minor Black Figures by Brandon Taylor. There’s also the knight/witch sapphic fantasy The Isle in the Silver Sea by Tasha Suri, and the Puerto Rican barrio-set generational tale This Is the Only Kingdom by Jaquira Díaz. As for the most popular books checked out on Libby last month, there’s a friendship with a giant octopus, a mystery following a midwife in 1789 Maine, and Percival Everett’s 2024 multi-award-winning satire. (Photo by Arturo Holmes/WireImage) Jeremy Strong is starring in a new Paramount+ show about 9/11 first responders. Strong is best known for playing Kendall Roy in HBO’s Succession. That role won him an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series Emmy Award in 2020, while he was also nominated for the same accolade two other times. He was also recently nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of Roy Cohn in 2024’s The Apprentice. What is Jeremy Strong’s 9/11 TV show about? Per The Hollywood Reporter, Jeremy Strong has now been tapped to star in 9/12, a six-episode limited series that is written, directed, and executive produced by Tobias Lindholm. The show is about “a landmark David vs. Goliath legal struggle that first responders to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attack faced before eventually winning compensation.” In addition to playing class-action lawyer Jason Smith, Strong will also executive produce the series, which will begin production in 2026. Frank Pugliese also serves as a writer and executive producer. “Though rooted in the unprecedented attacks of September 11, 2001, 9/12 speaks to struggles that reach far beyond that day. It asks what happens when those who risked everything are abandoned by the very institutions meant to protect them. The series is a testament to human strength and perseverance in the face of unthinkable adversity — the very tension that compelled me to tell this story,” Lindholm said. Strong said, “The great American historian David Halberstam once wrote about Sept. 11, 2001, ‘On a day when the worst of mankind showed itself, the best of mankind answered.’ 9/12 is about the best of us — our first responders whose official response time on 9/11 was five seconds. It is about a moment of unity and togetherness in this divided country, when, amidst the wreckage, we rebuilt and rose again from the rubble.” 9/12 will be released on Paramount+ in 2027. Photo Credit: HBO Max The first trailer for the new Game of Thrones spin-off show, titled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has been released. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is the forthcoming six-episode Game of Thrones spin-off show that premieres on HBO Max next year. Created by Ira Parker and George R. R. Martin, the series is an adaptation of the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. Check out the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms trailer below (watch more trailers and clips): What do we know about A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms? A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms stars Peter Claffey as Sir Duncan the Tall/Dunk, Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen/Egg, Finn Bennett as Prince Aerion “Brightflame” Targaryen, Bertie Carvel as Prince Baelor “Breakspear” Targaryen, Tanzyn Crawford as Tanselle, Daniel Ings as Ser Lyonel Baratheon, and Sam Spruell as Prince Maker Targaryen. The official logline reads, “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.” Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Parker explained how A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will be different than Game of Thrones and the other HBO spin-off show, House of the Dragon. “All decisions came down to Dunk, trying to channel the type of person he is into every aspect of this show, even the title sequence,” Parker explained. “The title sequences on the original [Game of Thrones] and House of Dragon are big and epic and incredible. Ramin Djawadi’s score is orchestral and large and beautiful. That’s not really Dunk’s M.O. He’s plain and he’s simple and he’s to-the-point. He doesn’t have a lot of flash to him. “…Nobody’s thinking about magic. This could basically be 14th-century Britain. This is hard-nose, grind it out, gritty, medieval knights, cold with a really light, hopeful touch. It’s a wonderful place to be. We are ground up in this series, we are starting right at the bottom. We’re not with the lords and ladies, the kings and queens.” A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres on January 18, 2026, on HBO Max. Originally reported by Brandon Schreur at SuperHeroHype. Photo Credit: Netflix The ongoing speculation about the future of Warner Bros. Discovery appears to have attracted several suitors, except Netflix, with the streaming giant reportedly not intending to submit a bid. Greg Peters, who serves as the co-CEO of the company, addressed the burning question regarding Netflix’s supposed interest in acquiring WBD at a recent event, expressing skepticism about such a deal ever materializing. Why Netflix may not acquire Warner Bros. Discovery Greg Peters has relayed uncertainty about Netflix ever forwarding a bid to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. Speaking at the recently conducted Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles about the proposed Netflix-WBD deal, the veteran entrepreneur noted, “We come from a deep heritage of being builders rather than buyers. One should have a reasonable amount of skepticism around big media mergers. They don’t have an amazing track record over time.” According to a report published by Deadline, Peters’ comments come after Paramount, which recently completed its merger with Skydance Media, showed signs of sending in an offer for the acquisition of WBD. While the entertainment juggernaut has yet to submit an official bid, the speculation has supposedly caused many media conglomerates to entertain the option of buying out WBD. Rumors have also suggested that current Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav had a significant role to play in inviting Netflix to the bidders’ table, as it would allow him to retain an important post in the company, post-acquisition. On the other hand, a deal with Paramount would not leave any assurances for Zaslav’s role in the organization. “Our job is to figure out what is the best way to grow the business,” Peters remarked when asked whether Netflix is unlikely to issue a bid for Warner Bros. Discovery. “We have to think really carefully about how we invest our capital, our time, and our attention. And if that’s the best way to do it, great. And if it’s not, we should do something else,” he added. The post Why Netflix’s Bid for Warner Bros. Discovery Is Unlikely appeared first on ComingSoon.net - Movie Trailers, TV & Streaming News, and More. View the full article

Photo Credit: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures Tron: Ares star Evan Peters shared a surprising connection his character has to the original movie. What is Tron: Ares villain’s unexpected connection to the original? In Tron: Ares, Peters plays Julian Dillinger, the CEO of Dillinger Systems. Fans of the franchise will recognize that Julian shares the same last name as Ed Dillinger, the villainous executive from the original Tron. Julian is Ed’s grandson, while Elisabeth Dillinger, played by Gillian Anderson, is Ed’s daughter and Julian’s mother. Peters explained how Julian will carry on the legacy of the Dillingers as he attempts to use AI for military efforts. “[In the] second film, the Dillingers are unveiling NCom12, and now Julian is unveiling this military AI, Ares,” Peters said to GamesRadar+. “So it sort of kicks off the movie. But like you said, it was in the writing, and then our characters’ relationship and dynamic – that was pretty fresh and new to the series. I was excited to jump on board with that.” Jared Leto stars as Ares, Dillinger’s creation. Ares is an intelligent and highly sophisticated AI created in the digital realm to be a super soldier in the real world. Ares is ordered to hunt Eve Kim (Greta Lee), the CEO of ENCOM, who has found the permanence code. With the permanence code, digital objects can become real, so Eve plans to use it to improve humanity by creating food and medicine. Julian needs the code for his takeover and will stop at nothing to retrieve it. Tron: Ares also stars Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, and Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, the former CEO of ENCOM and protagonist in the 1982 film. Joachim Rønning directs Tron: Ares from a screenplay by Jesse Wigutow. Producers include Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook, and Steven Lisberger. Tron: Ares is the third movie in the franchise, behind 1982’s Tron and 2010’s Tron: Legacy. Tron: Ares opens in theaters on October 10, 2025. Originally reported by Dan Girolamo on SuperHeroHype. http://blogs.fangraphs.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Kyle-Schwarber-NLDS-G3-2025.jpgJayne Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images Shutting down the Dodgers offense has been one of the toughest assignments in baseball this October. A series of great opposing pitchers, including Cy Young candidates aplenty, surrendered 27 runs in their first four playoff games. Sure, the Los Angeles pitching has been great too, but you can score on the Dodgers. The difficulty has been with stopping their unending procession of base-clearing prowess. The Phillies seemed to be well suited to stopping the Dodgers, but that was before Los Angeles won the first two games in Philadelphia. Even worse, the Dodgers sent ace Yoshinobu Yamamoto to the mound, so limiting the offense figured to be even more important than normal. That’s too much work for one starter, so Rob Thomson turned to Aaron Nola and Ranger Suárez looking for a tandem performance. As it turned out, that decision was inspired. Along with two Schwarbombs, the Nola-Suárez piggyback propelled the Phillies to an 8-2 win at Dodger Stadium and postponed elimination for at least one more night. Nola has had a rough year. He missed three months with injury, and looked much diminished when he did pitch en route to posting the worst single-season ERA (6.01) and FIP (4.58) marks of his long, decorated career. He wasn’t in this game for a long time, but he was in it for a good time. He came out absolutely jacked, with his velocity up two to three ticks and a snapping knuckle-curveball that hearkened back to his form of a few years ago. It didn’t click right away – Shohei Ohtani scorched a line drive for an out and then Mookie Betts tripled – but Nola buckled down, blew away Teoscar Hernández with a beautiful curve, and escaped the inning unscathed. He kept it going through a perfect second, perhaps as far as he was ever expected to go. While Nola might have gotten the start, Suárez was the linchpin of Philadelphia’s run prevention plan. Like Nola, Suárez didn’t exactly start his appearance strong. The first pitch he threw, to noted lefty killer Tommy Edman, left the park, giving the Dodgers a 1-0 lead in the third inning. But what, you’re going to not give up solo home runs to the Dodgers? That’s not realistic. Suárez wasn’t there to deal with just Edman; he was there to deal with Ohtani, Betts, Hernández, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith… you get the idea — his job was to keep the whole lineup in check. That one blemish wouldn’t be an issue if he made sure it didn’t spread. After that rude awakening, Suárez locked in quickly. He retired those five guys I just named in order, and he wasn’t afraid to dip into his bag of tricks to do it. Where Nola leaned harder on his two best pitches, Suárez doubled down on what works best for him: variety. He poured sinkers in against lefties, broke out four-seamers and changeups against righties, and generally kept hitters off balance and his infielders on their toes with a steady stream of grounders. He throws a six-pitch mix, with vastly different approaches depending on the batters he’s facing, and he stuck with that plan despite technically being a reliever instead of a starter in this game. The best Suárez starts don’t always look pretty, but they do look funky. It’s never the same pitch twice, never to the same location twice. He’s twice as likely to make you tap one into the ground than to strike you out. But the Dodgers, who have turned great pitchers into dust all year, couldn’t time him up. They’d hit the ball hard, but not in the air. Or they’d hit the ball in the air, but not hard. They’d come up small in big spots and big in small spots. That’s exactly what Suárez does when he’s at his best. As he cruised through five strong innings of work, it always felt like he was one bad pitch away from it all falling apart, and yet it never did. Meanwhile, Yamamoto was doing the opposite. Through three innings, he had the ball on a string, and his deep arsenal means that when he’s in command, it feels like no one could possibly score. Splitters in the low 90s? Sure. Cutters approaching that velocity and moving as if gravity didn’t exist? He’s got them. Curveballs that are 20 miles an hour slower than the rest of his pitch mix and seem to take a sharp turn in midair? Absolutely. But he couldn’t sustain his sharp location, and it doesn’t much matter how pretty your fastball is when you leave one middle-middle to Kyle Schwarber, who cranked a ludicrous 450-foot solo shot to tie the game, 1-1, in the fourth inning. Suddenly, it was like the Phillies had broken a spell. Bryce Harper lashed a sharp single to left. Alec Bohm followed that up with a groundball single up the middle. After some fielding hijinks and a sacrifice fly, J.T. Realmuto sliced a ground rule double to right. Even escaping the inning couldn’t cure Yamamoto’s sudden ineffectiveness. Philadelphia came out to start the fifth and put it on him again. Bryson Stott ripped a 101-mph single. Trea Turner followed with a 104-mph single of his own. The Phillies were hitting the snot out of the ball, and the Dodgers had to go to the bullpen, only three outs after it had looked like their ace was cruising toward another superlative outing. In the end, Yamamoto threw about as many pitches as Suárez did while missing fewer bats, though you’d never have known it from watching them pitch. The Phillies didn’t cash in any runs during the inning they chased Yamamoto. They didn’t score in the seventh, either, even after putting their first two runners on. Despite that offensive outburst and Suárez’s great game, it was still only a two-run game as the eighth inning rolled around. But if you’ve followed the Dodgers this year, you know their greatest weakness is their bullpen, and Yamamoto’s weak outing combined with the offense’s quiet night meant that manager Dave Roberts decided to go with the middle of the bullpen instead of the top, which cost him. First it was Anthony Banda, who got out of the fifth-inning jam for Yamamoto. Then it was Jack Dreyer, an unknown in the postseason perhaps, but he did his job too, pitching a scoreless sixth. Clayton Kershaw was the next man in, though, and to put it mildly, he didn’t have it. The only reason the Phillies didn’t score in the seventh, Kershaw’s first inning of work, was that Schwarber got turned inside out by a ball that got away from Smith (who was catching for the first time in a month because of a hairline fracture in his right hand), which left Schwarber standing still when Smith recovered the ball and gunned it to first for an easy out. Even then, the other two outs in the inning were line drives that found gloves. The Phillies were all over Kershaw. Realmuto led off the eighth with a solo shot. Turner drove home two more Phillies with a flared single. Schwarber stayed hot with a cloudscraping blast, his second home run of the night, to make it an 8-1 game. Now that the game was well and truly over, each team went to their token mopup men. The Dodgers added another run in the ninth, and managed to get Ohtani another plate appearance, which drew the incredibly rare two-out, six-run-lead pitching change. But he flied out harmlessly, setting up Game 4 in Los Angeles on Thursday. It wasn’t always pretty, featuring some ugly baserunning and some questionable decision-making, but it ultimately was effective for the Phillies. In a way, maybe that’s just what these Phillies are — the embodiment of a Ranger Suárez start. That look certainly suited them Wednesday night. Odds and Ends • This was Kershaw’s first playoff appearance as a reliever since the decisive Game 5 of the 2019 NLDS against the Nationals. After recording the final out of the seventh inning, he came back out for the eighth with the Dodgers clinging to a two-run lead and immediately gave up back-to-back home runs to Juan Soto and Anthony Rendon. The Nats won it in extras and were on their way to a World Series title. • Brandon Marsh had a rough night. With Harrison Bader too injured to play the field, the Phillies couldn’t platoon Marsh. The Dodgers are absolutely loaded with lefty relievers in their bullpen, so they twice intentionally walked Bohm to pitch to Marsh, who went 0-for-4 and also misplayed Betts’ first-inning hit into a triple. On one of those post-walk opportunities, he was too slow to get into the box, drawing a pitch clock violation, and then promptly took a pitch in the zone and swung at one outside of it to strike out on three demoralizing pitches. • Ohtani had a rough night, too. He went 0-for-5, bringing him to 1-for-14 for the series. The Los Angeles offense is so deep that it can still score in bunches when its best hitter isn’t clicking, but it definitely puts more pressure on everyone else in the lineup. I don’t think there’s anything predictive about this, to be clear, and he still looks every bit the same Shohei Ohtani as always, but right now, he could use a hit. • Rob Thomson should buy Schwarber a nice gift, because the manager made some weird decisions in this game that would be drawing a lot more scrutiny if the Phillies hadn’t rolled to an easy win. The announcers made a big point of mentioning that Thomson had extensively scripted out Nola’s outing, deciding in advance which batter would signal his departure, and thus which one Suárez would face first. He picked Edman, who is dangerous batting righty and comparatively punchless batting lefty, and Edman made him pay. Later in the game, Thomson called for a sacrifice bunt, the second straight game in which he’d done so. This one didn’t lead to a disastrous out on the basepaths, but it did create an easy out, and the Phillies didn’t score in that inning. Part of the reason that Marsh had such a rough day is that the Dodgers brought in tough lefties to attack the top of the Philadelphia lineup and then just left them in there to face Marsh, who was protected with a platoon partner during the regular season but is getting hung out to dry now. I assume he’s batting fifth because he hit there a lot during the regular season, but Thomson was often pinch-hitting for him in tough matchups then, and that isn’t the case now. It all just felt weird and disjointed – but of course, no one cares when you win 8-2. Source View the full article

(Photo Credit: Focus Features) Focus Features has shared the first teaser trailer for Hamnet, the upcoming historical drama led by Academy Award nominees Paul Mescal as William Shakespeare and Jessie Buckley as Agnes Shakespeare. It is based on Maggie O’Farrell’s 2020 novel of the same name, which is a fictional account of William Shakespeare’s son. The movie will be arriving in select theaters on November 27. Afterward, it will then expand nationwide on December 12. Check out the Hamnet trailer below (watch more trailers): What do we know about Hamnet? “Hamnet tells the powerful story of love and loss that inspired the creation of Shakespeare’s timeless masterpiece, Hamlet,” says the synopsis. Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao is directing Hamnet from a screenplay she co-wrote with O’Farrell. The cast also includes Joe Alwyn as Barthomew, Emily Watson as Mary Shakespeare, Olivia Lynes as Judith Shakespeare, Noah Jupe as Hamlet, Jack Shalloo as Marcellus, and David Wilmot as John, with Jacobi Jupe as Hamnet Shakespeare. The movie is produced by Liza Marshall, Pippa Harris, Nicolas Gonda, Sam Mendes, and Steven Spielberg. In addition, Zhao is also an executive producer along with Kristie Macosko Krieger and Laurie Borg. Following its world premiere at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival last September, the movie has received positive reviews from critics. It currently holds a Tomatometer rating of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 47 reviews. This serves as Zhao’s feature directorial comeback, four years after working on Marvel Studios’ Eternals movie. She is best known for her acclaimed work on the 2020 drama Nomadland, which scored multiple major awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Zhao, and Best Actress for Frances McDormand at the Oscars. The Twins conducted a complete fire sale at the trade deadline this year as they shipped 11 players off their big league roster, but one significant player who stayed in place was ace right-hander Pablo Lopez. The talented righty was limited to just 14 starts this season by a hamstring strain and a shoulder strain before his season came to an end in September due to a forearm strain. The fact of Lopez’s injury-marred season left the Twins unable to move him at the deadline this year when they purged the majority of their veteran players, but that doesn’t mean a deal can’t be made this offseason. After all, the aforementioned forearm strain that ended his season came with “no concern” regarding Lopez’s UCL or elbow, and all indications point to him being expected to have a normal offseason and be ready for the 2026 campaign. What’s more, Lopez was nothing short of excellent when healthy this year as he pitched to a 2.79 ERA with a 3.19 FIP in 75 2/3 innings of work. That’s the sort of top-of-the-rotation potential that contending teams will want to bring in desperately this winter, and the Twins could stand to benefit from trading Lopez during an offseason where there are few free agents who offer much certainty. Dylan Cease, Zac Gallen, and Framber Valdez all had tough years that didn’t quite reach their typical standards, while Brandon Woodruff and Shane Bieber face health-related questions after seasons coming off major surgery. Lopez has his own flaws, of course, including his array of recent injuries and a pedestrian 4.08 ERA as recently as last year. Even so, the uncertainty surrounding this crop of free agent starters can only serve to make Lopez more attractive by comparison. It’s unclear what the Twins’ payroll capacity or competitive expectations for 2025 are, but if the team embarks on a lengthy rebuild it would make little sense to hold onto the final two years and $43.5MM left on the Lopez’s contract. With young arms like Mick Abel, Simeon Woods Richardson, Taj Bradley, Zebby Matthews, and David Festa all likely to compete for a spot in the rotation. Holdovers Joe Ryan and Bailey Ober will surely be in the rotation (unless they’re traded themselves), and Kendry Rojas could be ready for the majors at some point next year as well. That deep group of young rotation pieces makes Lopez a bit more expendable to the Twins than he would be for most teams, at least if they aren’t expecting to compete next year. Given the fact that Lopez would surely bring back a hefty return on the trade market and the depth the Twins currently enjoy in their rotation, using the right-hander to infuse more offensive talent into the club’s roster would make a lot of sense. With that being said, it’s worth noting that the Twins actually still have some notable talent on paper. Lopez, Ryan, and Ober could form a front three in the rotation that many contenders in the league would be jealous of. Star outfielder Byron Buxton has been healthier of late and has the offensive ability to be an anchor for a playoff lineup. Players like Royce Lewis and Matt Wallner have shown impressive ceilings despite their inconsistency, while young bats like Brooks Lee and Luke Keaschall could take a big step forward. It’s not impossible to imagine a viable offensive core coming together as soon as next year, especially if top prospects like Emmanuel Rodriguez and Walker Jenkins can contribute at some point. Of course, even with those positives the Twins would need to significantly invest in the team in order to build a real contender for 2026. RosterResource estimates the club’s current payroll for 2026 to fall into the range of $95MM, and while that leaves around $40MM in budget space relative to the 2025 club’s payroll it’s an open question how much of that (if any) will actually be reinvested into the major league club given the clear financial motivations behind this summer’s Correa trade. The Twins would need serious help in the bullpen in order to compete after losing Griffin Jax, Louis Varland, and Jhoan Duran at the deadline, and players like Kody Clemens and Austin Martin starting regularly at first base and in left field wouldn’t exactly inspire confidence either. If the front office is facing substantial financial constraints that weren’t in place this time last year, there may be an argument for moving Lopez even if they do want to compete next year. After all, his $21.75MM salary could then be reinvested into the offense or bullpen, both of which have much less depth than the rotation does at present. How do MLBTR readers view the situation? Should the Twins trade Lopez this offseason, either in hopes of reallocating his salary to other parts of the roster or as part of a full-scale rebuild? Or should they keep their ace in the fold to give themselves the best shot of winning next year? Have your say in the poll below: Take Our Poll View the full article
