  4. (Image Credit: Capcom) Cody Rhodes has shared an update on the forthcoming Street Fighter movie. A new Street Fighter movie directed by Kitao Sakurai is now in production. Based on the popular video game series published by Capcom, the film is scheduled to arrive in United States theaters in a little over a year from Paramount Pictures. WWE star Cody Rhodes has been tapped to play Guile in the Street Fighter movie, while the cast also includes Noah Centineo as Ken Masters, Andrew Koji as Ryu, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Roman Reigns as Akuma, David Dastmalchian as M. Bison, and more. What did Cody Rhodes say about the Street Fighter movie? During a recent interview on The Pat McAfee Show, via Wrestling Inc., Rhodes shared an update about the film’s production and teased some of the stunts that fans will see once the movie is finished. “I was adamant that anything that’s a stunt, I want to do it,” Rhodes said. “If that requires me being on these wires, I want to do it. If you put another guy in the corner who I know is gonna do the shot after, I still want a shot at it.” Rhodes said that he was allowed to attempt to do most of his character’s stunts at least once, while stuntmen then filmed extra takes. The WWE star said he was unsure how many of the stunt scenes he filmed would make it into the final cut of Street Fighter. “Noah [Centineo], Callina [Liang], and [Andrew] Koji, who are the three leads, [are] unbelievably good actors, who are taking it so dead serious and are there to work every day,” Rhodes added. “Then you’ve got me, 50 Cent, Andrew Schultz, and Roman. We were able to play.” The Street Fighter movie officially arrives on October 16, 2026. Originally reported by Brandon Schreur at SuperHeroHype. 6. Welcome to Today in Books, our daily round-up of literary headlines at the intersection of politics, culture, media, and more. The Sad State of Literary Fiction Perhaps because I’m rarely looking at the state of books through the exclusive lens of literary fiction, this opinion on the dearth of good lit fic and, hence, the tough job of serving on this year’s Booker Prize jury, raised my eyebrows. The piece spawned from a comment made by Irish author and Booker Prize jury chair Roddy Doyle to a Southbank Centre in London audience. Doyle allegedly said too many of the 153 novels submitted for the prize were a waste of the jury’s time. If you’re curious about which books were decidedly not a waste of time and made the Booker shortlist, you can find that list here. Meanwhile, I’ve been celebrating how many great books are out this year but, again, I’m speaking very inclusively. I’m thinking about One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This (nonfiction), The Buffalo Hunter Hunter (speculative historical fiction), Katabasis (fantasy), Mother Mary Comes to Me (memoir), and others across the genre/category spectrum. I’ve probably read more literary fiction this year than in previous years and I admit I can only name one so far that’s stayed with me (Stone Yard Devotional by Charlotte Wood, funny enough shortlisted for last year’s Booker Prize but published in the U.S. this year), but I’m very obviously not as attuned to the state of that category, so Johanna Thomas-Corr’s piece at The Times stood out as worth a read. The Paddington of It All Paddington Bear is learning the hard way that nothing is sacred in 2025. StudioCanal, Paddington’s rights holder, is suing a British producer for their YouTube series featuring a Paddingtonesque foul-mouthed podcast host. If you’re a YouTube viewer with a penchant for British content, you might have heard about this irreverent BAFTA and Emmy award-winning puppet show, but if you haven’t it sounds like no celebrity or politician is safe from its roasting antics. The lawsuit cites copyright and design right issues. It’s hard to say how strong a case they have in the High Court as I’m not sure how satire plays into copyright infringement claims across the pond, but my guess is that it’ll be hard won if it’s won at all. The Nobel in Literature Will Be Announced This Week Are you anticipating the announcement of this year’s Nobel Prize in Literature? Well, that’s happening this Thursday, and if you know it’s prestigious but not much more, here’s a quick and snappy guide to the awards, including what they are, who’s won it in the past, and what the laureates receive. Oh, and you can also anticipate the announcement of the finalists for this year’s National Book Awards. Let literary awards season wash over you! 6 New Mystery & Thriller Adaptations to Watch in October 2025 I am wallowing like a happy hog in new seasons of some of my favorite shows, and there’s still more coming down the pike. This one’s for fans of mystery and thriller adaptations, including a manga series turned anime, a Ruth Ware adaptation and sequel, and some bonus book adaptation comps. What are you reading? 7. Photo Credit: New Line Cinema ComingSoon Senior Editor Brandon Schreur spoke to Freddy’s Dead: The Final Nightmare director Rachel Talalay about the brand-new A Nightmare on Elm Street 7-film collection from New Line Cinema. Talalay discussed how she approached the Freddy Krueger character, what she learned from directing Freddy’s Dead, and more. “Freddy Krueger, the vengeful child killer burned alive by angry parents, returns to haunt the dreams of their children when this chilling 7-film saga becomes available as a 4K UHD collection for the first time. From his first terrifying appearance on Elm Street to his resurrection through nightmares, Freddy unleashes horror across generations – where sleep is no escape, and dreams become deadly,” a description of the product reads. The A Nightmare on Elm Street 7-film collection is now available to purchase. Click here for more information. Brandon Schreur: Rachel, you were a producer on some of the Nightmare on Elm Street movies before you directed Freddy’s Dead. Given that you’ve been so heavily involved in this franchise, I guess I want to start by asking what the Nightmare on Elm Street movies mean to you. What was it about these films that kept bringing you back, to the point where you were eventually directing one? Rachel Talalay: I now say, even now with my directing, that everything I ever learned about filmmaking, I learned on A Nightmare on Elm Street. They were so unbelievably challenging because they were so inventive. It was the most creative environment you could possibly be put in, in the most challenging way. With not enough money. How could you turn down the sort of learning curve of going from being an accountant to producer to director on a franchise that was so fantastic and had such a fanbase immediately? Totally. Building off that, given that you were involved with the franchise for so long before directing Freddy’s Dead, I’m curious what you think the most important aspect of Freddy Krueger to get right is. I mean, he’s obviously terrifying; Robert has haunted all of our nightmares for decades, now. But we also love Freddy because he’s funny, and he can be so creative with his kills. When you approached Freddy’s Dead and started working on this movie, what was going through your mind as far as what this horror icon needs the most? I think that there was a drop-off in the box office. The box office jumped on [A Nightmare on Elm Street] 3, it was doing well on 4, and then dropped off on 5. I think a lot of the humor had gone out of the franchise on 5. Which is a beautiful, remarkable film, but it’s quite different. We were assigned to bring back more of the date movie, if you can call it that, aspect of it. Balancing that, I think Michael De Luca wrote a very, very funny script as well. It was a very pop-culture-oriented script for the time. Which works, and then sometimes feels dated and doesn’t work, and then sometimes works really well. In terms of Freddy, there was a lot of conversation with Robert in terms of direction and where he wanted to go. You have to trust the master. Robert Shay, the head of New Line, and Robert Englund, the two Roberts, were the masters of where to go with it. Sure, totally. I will say, I love all the Nightmare sequels, but I really love yours because it does remind me of the first movie so much, where you do bring it back and balance everything at just the right level — not too funny, not too scary, but the perfect match of both. I think you nailed Freddy’s Dead. Oh, thank you, thank you. I just wanted to point out that the chair in the background is the chair from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, where Nancy — you’re the first person I told this to — where Nancy falls into the boiler room. I didn’t even realize, but that totally is. That’s awesome. I’m so jealous, that’s so cool. So, Rachel, you’ve obviously done a whole lot of work in your directing career since Freddy’s Dead. I love Tank Girl, and you’ve worked on some TV shows that I really love. Is there a single lesson, more so than all the others, that you learned from Freddy’s Dead that you brought with you to the rest of your career? Never say you can’t do anything. No matter how little money there is, and no matter how many times they say no, there’s an incredibly creative way to solve the problem. So, never say no and always come up with — I mean, I built dissolving hands out of little bath bombs, party bath bombs. Never let being told how expensive it is going to be get in the way of actually doing what you want to do as creatively as you come up with. Thanks to Rachel Talalay for taking the time to discuss A Nightmare on Elm Street 7-film collection. Bill’s wardrobe not only made him stand out among his contemporaries but also influenced a new look that quickly became popular among all. Recalling the women’s wardrobes and makeup of Days of Our Lives during the 1960s-1970s, Susan mentioned how everyone was wearing fake lashes and false hair and dyeing their hair dark. Reflecting on how things were different back then, which naturally led to insecurity in most actors, the 82-year-old shared how she would wait in the doorway of her dressing room for that one approval from the producers and directors. Beaming with Pride, the actress shared that she and her husband, who had the hottest storyline on Days of Our Lives, were featured on the cover of Time Magazine. Further, the couple was featured in an article titled “Sex and Suffering in the Afternoon,” which aptly represented the culture of the time, contrary to popular beliefs. 14. Photo by John Phillips/Getty Images Veteran director Ridley Scott, known for classics like Alien, Gladiator, and Blade Runner, recently criticized the current state of Hollywood movies. He admitted that he has resorted to watching his old movies because the industry is “drowning in mediocrity.” Ridley Scott says ‘mediocrity’ in Hollywood has led him to watch his own old movies While speaking about his career at the BFI Southbank in London on October 5, Ridley Scott expressed his frustration with Hollywood. He stated that he believes that most of the movies in the industry today are lacking in quality. “The quantity of movies that are made today, literally globally, millions. Not thousands, millions… and most of it is s—,” he shared. He explained how he believes that filmmakers rely too much on digital effects to cover up weak scripts. “I think a lot of films today are saved and made more expensive by digital effects, because what they haven’t got is a great thing on paper first. Get it on paper,” Scott expressed. Scott also explained why he has found himself watching his own movies. “Well, actually, right now, I’m finding mediocrity. We’re drowning in mediocrity. And so what I do, it’s a horrible thing, but I’ve started watching my own movies, and actually, they’re pretty good! And also, they don’t age,” he admitted. “I watched Black Hawk [Down] the other night and I thought, ‘How in the hell did I manage to do that?’ But I think occasionally a good one will happen, [and] it’s like a relief that there’s somebody out there who’s doing a good movie,” the director shared. While reflecting on his early career, Scott recalled feeling like “a stranger in a strange land” when he first came to Hollywood to make Blade Runner, especially as an English director. Nonetheless, he described Blade Runner as “the most personal movie” he has made. He said that making it was “very hard” because it was “so different and such a new universe.” Ridley Scott is currently working on his upcoming sci-fi, The Dog Stars. The movie will debut on March 27, 2026. The post Ridley Scott Has Begun Watching His Old Movies, Here’s Why appeared first on ComingSoon.net - Movie Trailers, TV & Streaming News, and More. 16. Photo Credit: Paramount+ Robert Patrick has opened up about his new role, Jeremiah Dunmire, in Tulsa King Season 3. The actor revealed that his character isn’t intimidated by Sylvester Stallone’s Dwight Manfredi. Patrick further stated that Season 3 introduces a power dynamic, with Dwight finally coming face-to-face with a worthy opponent. Robert Patrick says Sylvester Stallone’s Dwight has finally ‘met a formidable adversary’ in Tulsa King As Tulsa King Season 3 unfolds, Robert Patrick shared that his character, Jeremiah Dunmire, isn’t afraid of Stallone’s Dwight Manfredi. Speaking about the growing tension between the two, Patrick said Dwight has “met a formidable adversary.” Patrick’s Jeremiah is introduced as a powerful and dangerous figure who is determined to seek revenge after Dwight buys a rival bourbon distillery out from under him. According to Patrick, Dwight’s attempts to intimidate Jeremiah only expose his own fear. The actor explained, “When he actually meets me, and I do give him that, and I let him know my intent: ‘Listen, you’re intruding in my life, intruding in my business like this, I’m obligated now with what I have to do? These are the next steps, and I will destroy you.’” (via TV Insider) Patrick continued, “And then I think he’s trying to work himself out of being fearful of Jeremiah by saying to him, literally, ‘You’re afraid.’” He added, “And that’s how I saw it when I read the scene: He’s trying to make me afraid, when actually, he’s really met a formidable adversary.” However, despite everything, Patrick said viewers will also see signs of Jeremiah’s weakness as the story continues. The actor stated, “I think you’ll start to see me unraveling, and then I do have some nicks in my armor that are going to be exposed, and you will start to see me be a little bit more vulnerable.” Through the first few episodes in Season 3, Jeremiah’s revenge quickly escalates. He orders his son Cole to eliminate a former business rival and later confronts Dwight directly. By Episode 3, the rivalry escalates after Cole steals back valuable barrels of bourbon from Dwight’s crew. 17. I must admit that I’m a little surprised at the books that ended up standing out as the most notable BIPOC books being published this month. I was expecting a little more horror, given the month, though there is one book in the bonus section below that is a first-contact thriller set in the heart of the Cherokee Nation. I can’t see why any aliens would want to set foot (tentacle?) on Earth, considering how messy humans are, but hey. With that said, the books below belong to a variety of genres and eras. There’s a dystopian set in a near-future India that’s been ravaged by climate change, a medieval sapphic fantasy with a knight/witch romance, and more. A Guardian and a Thief by Megha Majumdar This National Book Award long-listed book is set in a near-future dystopian Kolkata, India, where food is scarce and climate change has wreaked havoc. Ma is this close to escaping the constant floods and lack of food by taking her aging father and her two-year-old daughter with her to become reunited with her husband in the United States. But then her painstakingly attained immigration documents are stolen, and her family’s future suddenly doesn’t feel so secure. Over a week, she sets out to find the thief and recover her things—but we find out the thief is Boomba, who is desperate to save his family, too. His crimes have been escalating, all in the name of love and survival. Both families want to survive in a world they didn’t create, that doesn’t seem to have enough for them. Minor Black Figures by Brandon Taylor Booker Prize finalist Taylor’s latest follows a Black artist from the South who is struggling a bit to find his place in the Manhattan art scene. Wyeth is navigating bad art shows, pretension, and even backstabbing as he tries to settle into a new art ecosystem. Then he meets Keating, who left the priesthood, and he begins to question the way Blackness fits into white art spaces…or rather, how it doesn’t. The Isle in the Silver Sea by Tasha Suri Here’s a new sapphic fantasy from the award-winning author of the Burning Kingdoms series! A witch and a knight fated to fall in love and be torn apart over and over must find a way to halt the cycle of their story. Meanwhile, a mysterious assassin is on the prowl, looking to permanently destroy anyone with a story like theirs. — Liberty Hardy This Is the Only Kingdom by Jaquira Díaz From the award-winning author who gave us Ordinary Girls comes a barrio-set story replete with generational grief, local Robin Hoods, and even a murder investigation. Rey el Cantante is the aforementioned local Robin Hood, who is beloved in his community. He meets Maricarmen, who starts to dream of a life outside of waitressing, cleaning houses, and the realities of living in a poverty-stricken neighborhood in Puerto Rico. 18. Photo Credit: Heidi Gutman/Bravo/NBCU Photo Bank via Getty Images Nearly a year after being involved in a three-vehicle crash, Southern Charm alum Kathryn Dennis was sentenced to prison on Friday. She has been convicted of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). The 34-year-old will serve 30 days in prison as per the conviction. Here’s what happened to Kathryn Dennis. Kathryn Dennis sentenced to 30 days in jail for driving under influence On Monday, May 20, 2024, Kathryn Dennis caused a three-vehicle crash near the intersection of US Highway 52 and Stephanie Drive in the Goose Creek area. When the authorities arrived, bystanders and witnesses informed them that Dennis was reeking of alcohol and seemed thoroughly impaired. The responding officer also noted she had “glossy eyes” (via Count On 2 News). The police found an unopened mini-Fireball bottle on the driver’s side floorboard and an empty pink tumbler. The responding officer also confirmed smelling alcohol on Dennis. She initially denied drinking or taking any medications. After this, she consented to field sobriety tests, and the officers noted that several things implied she was impaired. She later admitted to having consumed alcohol much earlier. But she refused to take medical tests and treatment. She was ultimately given a $1,475 bond. This Friday, the court sentenced her to 30 days in the Berkeley County jail. There has been no concrete statement from the star’s side yet. Before this incident, she allegedly caused a hit-and-run that generated major controversy. During the sixth season of Southern Charm, where she remained for most of her career, she admitted that she was drunk all the time. Perhaps her past controversies also played a part in this conviction. With Kathryn Dennis jailed for the next 30 days, her fans can expect to hear a statement from the reality TV star or her team pretty soon. Stay tuned. 21. If you love mysteries, thrillers, and adaptations, October has a bunch of selections worth making a bucket of popcorn for! First, some housekeeping: if you saw The Savant on my September adaptations roundup and are wondering why you can’t find it, the answer is Apple TV+ decided to self-censor and pulled the show days before it premiered. The star of the show, Jessica Chastain, responded with her disagreement, as noted in Rolling Stone: “The Savant is about the heroes who work every day to stop violence before it happens, and honoring their courage feels more urgent than ever.” Variety TV critic, Aramide Tinubu, also wrote about the show: “Having watched the eight-episode series for review — which was set to be under embargo until Sept. 25 — it’s clear that “The Savant” is precisely the type of show America needs right now.” And now onto October’s scheduling: We have a blockbuster psychological thriller film, a cozy ghostly murder mystery set in Ireland, a delightful anime series for found family and spy fans, a new Mick Herron adaptation with another killer cast, a “one last heist” film, and a harrowing film about a real-life fire. Bonus: I’ve also added some great book recommendations throughout that are comps to the source material and/or the adaptations themselves. The Woman in Cabin 10 (Netflix) The Woman in Cabin 10 (Lo Blacklock #1) by Ruth Ware Almost a decade ago, Ruth Ware followed up her very successful debut —In a Dark, Dark Wood—with an even more successful psychological thriller, The Woman in Cabin 10. Set on a small luxury cruise, travel writer Lo Blackwood, swears that she witnessed the body of a woman go overboard. Problem? No one believes her. This year not only sees the adaptation release, but The Woman in Cabin 10 just got a sequel, The Woman in Suite 11, where Lo returns a decade after the first book’s timeline to be thrust into a new mystery (this time centering a luxury Swiss hotel) with some old “friends” from the first book. Netflix has adapted Ware’s book into a psychological thriller film starring Keira Knightley as Lo. Get your popcorn ready on October 10th and situate yourself on the edge of your seat. Watch the trailer here. Bonus book rec: For another remote mystery set on a ship (a cruise to Antarctica), pick up Midnight by Amy McCulloch. For a historical mystery leaning towards the cozier side, pick up A Decline in Prophets by Sulari Gentill, which starts on the R.M.S. Aquitania, a luxury liner, filled with an eclectic mix of characters. Haunted Harmony Mysteries: Buried at C (Hallmark Channel) Murder in G Major (Gethsemane Brown Mysteries #1) by Alexia Gordon Alexia Gordon wrote a delightful, and funny, cozy mystery series set in Ireland that pairs up an American music teacher with the ghost living in her house. Hallmark began adapting the series into film in 2023 with Haunted Harmony Mysteries: Murder in G Major and returns to the Hallmark channel on Sunday, October 12th at 8/7c with Buried at C. Tamera Mowry-Housley is back as boarding school music teacher Gethsemane along with her ghostly sidekick Eamon. Their case? The unexplained death of a sea captain! Spy X Family season 3 (Crunchyroll) Spy x Family, Vol. 1 by Tatsuya Endo, Casey Loe (Translator), Rina Mapa, and Jimmy Presler The manga Spy X Family is a fun series with a found family at its core, as each member needs the appearance of a family for their missions and is holding a huge secret. The truly fun element is that they each think they’re the only one with a secret. The manga series has been adapted into an anime series and the third season will be on Crunchyroll starting October 4th. Let the spying—and infiltrating of an elite school—continue! Watch the trailer here. Down Cemetery Road (Apple TV+) Down Cemetery Road (The Oxford Investigations #1) by Mick Herron Mick Herron’s Slow Horses adaptation is such a hit (it’s fantastic) that it was really in Apple TV+’s best interest to take another swing at adapting one of his series. Down Cemetery Road moves from the spy genre to domestic and PI thriller with a housewife who becomes obsessed with what happened to a little girl after her parents died in a house explosion. I’m going to assume that the adaptation creators are keeping the dark humor formula, as they certainly kept the excellent casting formula: Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson will play the housewife and the PI she hires. You can start watching the first two episodes in the series on October 29th. Watch the trailer here. The Lost Bus (Apple TV+) Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire by Lizzie Johnson Lizzie Johnson, a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, wrote a book about one of the deadliest fires in the US, which wiped out an entire town in Paradise, California, in November 2018. The Lost Bus is a harrowing film that feels like a thriller based on events in the book. It stars America Ferrera and Matthew McConaughey portraying real-life people Mary Ludwig (a school teacher) and Kevin McKay (a bus driver) who worked together to save a bus full of children and escape the inferno. You can now stream the film on Apple TV+. Watch the trailer here. Bonus book rec: If you want fire as a character in a procedural with a past and present mystery, pick up Jane Harper’s The Dry (there’s an adaptation film starring Eric Bana). Play Dirty (Amazon Prime) The Hunter by Richard Stark The Parker novels by Richard Stark (pen name for Donald E. Westlake) are a 24-book classic crime series set in 1950s New York, where Parker is a “pro thief, expert robber” set on revenge. The adapted film starring Mark Wahlberg and LaKeith Stanfield follows Parker in his quest for revenge, which is what leads him into the major heist (sunken treasure!) trope. There’s distrustful partners, the NY mob, and a mismatched heist crew! Stream it now on Amazon Prime video. Watch the trailer here. Bonus book recs: if you’re looking for the “one last heist” trope, I’ve got a great list for you here: Assemble a Crew: 8 “One Last Heist” Mystery and Thriller Books If you’d like to see previous roundups for 2025’s mystery, thriller, and true crime adaptations, you can find them here. 22. No one will deny that censorship is a hot-button topic, but the word itself conjures so many huge feelings that there’s a danger of the meaning being lost. The ACLU tells us that censorship, the suppression of words, images, or ideas that are “offensive,” happens whenever some people succeed in imposing their personal political or moral values on others. As adults, it’s fair to want to be able to make a majority of those calls for ourselves. How does this right change when we’re talking about kids? In a perfect world, things would be withheld from kids solely based on a deep understanding of child development, a neutral political stance, and a willingness to grapple with nuance daily. The world is far from perfect, and book bans in particular are more often about erasure than protection. Kelly Jensen, an author and Book Rioter who has done extensive work on covering the rise of censorship and book banning in the United States, offers an excellent primer on explaining book bans to adults who want to understand. This is a powerful starting point, but adjustment is needed to help kids, especially those in elementary school, understand the concept of censorship. Bring in the books about censorship for kids! I’ve gathered a few titles that deal with banning books, which is a tangible way that censorship affects our youngest citizens. These books deal less with what kinds of things should or shouldn’t be banned and more with the idea that one person cannot decide what is right for everyone, and that the feeling of being left out or erased is something that should be spoken about. Raising children of every belief and value with those two truths will go a long way in fighting harmful censorship. 3 Books About Censorship for Kids This Book Is Banned: A Delightfully Silly Picture Book by Raj Haldar and Julia Patton If you’re looking to start a conversation about censorship for kids, start here. The word “silly” in the title is key, and “delightful” is in the right place, as well. Compared to the classic The Monster At The End of This Book, this story breaks the fourth wall in a panic as topic after topic is banned from its pages. The takeaway is that one person can’t decide what is right for everyone, but the book avoids any preachy tones with its hijinks and hilarity. The Day the Books Disappeared by Joanna Ho, Caroline Kusin Pritchard, and Dan Santat This fun and funny picture book deals with the controversial idea that planes are the absolute best and really only necessary reading material. Arnold cannot understand why anyone would want to read about anything else! When a magic power lets him disappear books that he doesn’t think are interesting, he sees that before very long, even his own favorites might go POOF! Ho, Pritchard, and Santat pair their kid-friendly message about appreciating different perceptions with a letter for adults about championing books of all kinds. Roar for Reading by Beth Ferry and Andrew Joyner A lion named Julius helps kids ROAR for books by reminding them they can stand up for what they believe in. Books are being banned at Julius’s local library, and he is ready to be a protector of the stories! This clever book features fun Easter eggs for adults (look for book puns and parodies in the illustrations) and helpful back matter, including an acronym (“Recognize. Organize. Act. Respect.”) that is a call to action. Hopefully, you’ve found a starting point in these books about censorship for kids. Happy reading! View the full article
  23. Anybody who knows me knows that I have a lot of feelings, and I am very keen on feeling all of them. They help me move through the world. It was a strange experience to read Almond because our protagonist Yunjae is not like me. He has a brain condition called Alexithymia that makes it hard for him to feel any emotions. His amygdalae are different from most of us. They make it difficult for him to feel pain, know danger or joy, speak to people, or make friends. Because he does not feel like the rest of us, he has nothing to guide him through interactions with others. His mother and grandmother work relentlessly to teach him the rules of the social world. She hopes to make life easier for her little boy. Almond by Won-Pyung Sohn, translated by Sandy Joosun Lee Yunjae does not know anybody who is anything like him. But his mother and grandmother are always by his side. In a truly tragic incident, that shifts too. He is pushed further into isolation. Meanwhile, due to another fateful turn of events, Gon joins his school. Unlike Yunjae, Gon has a lot of feelings, mostly of rage, that he is very expressive with. He starts to bully Yunjae, expecting the satisfaction of getting to his victim. But Yunjae cannot give Gon what he wants. Slowly, the two boys start to spend more time together. Neither of them understands the other, but a familiarity starts to develop anyway. This content is for members only. Visit the site and log in/register to read.View the full article
  24. Abandoned when her Omen stain appeared, Sozo survives by hiding her curse—a rare gift her mentor Esp needs to infiltrate the deadly Decade Race of Stars. The prize: a wish for anything. Esp dreams of reshaping the world, and Sozo convinces herself the risk is worth it. But concealing her monstrous side grows harder, especially after meeting Naqi, whose friendship awakens doubts. As dangers mount, Sozo must decide: fight for Esp’s dream, protect Naqi, or claim the wish for herself—even if it costs everything. We all know the hero’s journey. We’ve had tales of chosen ones since the beginning of our own stories and myths. A sword in a stone: whoever pulls it out will be the king who unites England. A young, seemingly weak, poor boy succeeds in doing it. He rises to become the greatest king that’s ever been—but he has a connection that he can’t shake with the dark forces, the fae, and temptations that threaten to lead him astray. Chosen-one tales are threaded throughout our fantasy and science fiction history, from Ursula K. Le Guin’s A Wizard of Earthsea and Ged’s young power to George R.R. Martin’s Prince Who Was Promised. Some tell us from the beginning who the chosen one is; others let us wonder and speculate. And all of them play on essential questions that humanity finds fascinating. Is our life predestined or chosen? Are great leaders born or are they made? All of the chosen-one novels below play in some way with these questions, while painting fantastic and compelling worlds for our protagonists to work their way through. She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan It’s 1345, and Zhu Chongba and her brother know their destinies. She is given a fate of nothingness. He is given a fate of greatness. But when bandits attack their family and her brother is killed, the girl makes a decision. She refuses her destiny. She takes on the identity of Zhu Chongba, and his fate with it. Rising through the ranks of the monastery, Zhu learns to play the game of politics and gender, and her determination to survive quickly becomes a desire to be a power that will help reclaim the empire itself from the Mongols who rule it. The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna In Deka’s village, when people come of age, they take part in a blood ceremony. The color of their blood decides whether they’ll be part of their village or not. And hers runs gold—meaning she’s forced out. Devastated, she stumbles onto a group of girls just like her. Gold blood, a woman tells her, is a sign that she’s one of the alaki, semi-immortal women whose incredible powers make them the only chance anyone has to defeat a huge, looming threat that is coming to threaten them all. A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik Scholomance is a school for people with magic to learn how to use it. Ever-shifting and incredibly dangerous, the school operates on an unusual model: at the end of your fourth year, either you survive the rush of monsters and dark forces and graduate, or you die. El is unlikable and grating, and she has an incredibly dark gift, based in curses, so she isn’t exactly popular among her classmates. But slowly, she and unexpected ally, golden-boy Orion, start to realize that there’s a way to fix what’s broken in Scholomance—and they might have to do it, for anyone at the school to have a fighting chance. Legendborn by Tracy Deonn Bree just wants to get away from home when she goes to UNC for a pre-college program. But when she runs into a secret society of students reportedly descended from the Round Table knights themselves, she’s thrown into a world of magic, demons, and the battles between good and evil. Meanwhile, an ex-member wants her help to investigate the group. Naturally, nothing is quite as it seems, and Bree is forced to try and decide whether to believe the Legendborn or make her own calls about what feels right. Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor Sunny is albino, and often outcast as a result. But then she learns that she is a Leopard Person, with magical abilities, and that she can become invisible, shift time, and possibly even see visions of the future. Okorafor’s world of giant red grasshoppers, sculpting wasps, and much more is absolutely fascinating. Sunny and her friends deal with classic young-adult nonsense right alongside their magical training and a new maybe-threat to everyone, a vision of disaster that only Sunny may be able to stop. The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline In a dystopian Canada, people have completely lost the ability to dream—and are slowly but surely going insane as a result. In the midst of all this, white people discover that indigenous bone marrow could save them, and quickly, Native Americans are being hunted. Frenchie and his group have been on the run from the Recruiters for a long time, but they discover that one of their talents might actually be able to take the whole process down. This book subverts the chosen-one trope in a lot of ways, emphasizing collective resistance and memory. Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi The West African–inspired world of Orïsha used to thrum with magic. But then one night, it all disappeared; a tyrant had all maji murdered. But princess Amari has found a scroll that she thinks has a way to bring the magic back; Zélie Adebola, a young seer, is chosen by the gods to help in her quest; and Inan, the heir to the throne, must decide what side he’s on. In some ways, all three protagonists are chosen ones, and this book is action-packed as they try to take down the rigid racist system that King Saran has imposed. Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim Shiori has magic she shouldn’t have. In this book that mixes Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Wild Swans” with Chinese folklore, she lets her magic leak out; her stepmother tells her that if she speaks of it, one of her brothers will die, every time. Shiori is cast out and lost, trying to find her brothers and realizing more and more that she’s destined to do much more. She has the power to save the entire kingdom from dark forces with the help of a sea dragon named Seryu. Can’t get enough fantasy? 25. Jack Boniface is having a weird day. He swears he can sense things moving in the shadows on the campus of NYU. Below New Orleans, Freda—among the most beloved voodoo gods—is missing, causing a power struggle that spills over into the human world. When an unexpected death brings Jack back to New Orleans, he finds a city in violent uproar, and finds he is heir to the mantle of Shadowman, tasked with maintaining the delicate balance of power between the Deadside and the real world. With the fate of both worlds hanging in the balance, a new Shadowman is rising. Jack just hopes it’s not from the ashes of his city. Oh, superheroes and I go way back. Like, further than that. They were what first made me a fan of comic books in the early 90s. As much as I dig all sorts of comics now, I still come back to superheroes all the time. And wouldn’t you know it, there are always great new superhero comics hitting shelves every week. What makes a great superhero comic? Iconic characters always help. Great action, witty banter, deep dialog, and stories that have more to say than one superpowered person punching another. Above all that, though, a great creative team will always get me to grab those glossy pages. And if we’re talking new, then I’m bringing you nothing but first issues. October has barely begun, and already, there are a slew of great new superhero comics on and coming soon to your local comic book shop. Here are six that you need to add to your pull list. Binary #1 by Stephanie Phillips, Giada Belviso Good ole Carol Danvers. Sometimes she’s Captain Marvel. Sometimes, she’s the even-more-powerful Binary. She always makes for a good superhero comic. This time? She’s Binary plus the Phoenix Force. With all this godlike power, what’s she to do? She wants to save what little is left of the universe, even if she won’t survive to see it. Justice League: The Omega Act Special #1 by Joshua Williamson, Yasmine Putri This one-off special is the beginning of the end. Well, the end of the DC All-In event that’s been running for a year. Darkseid is in hot pursuit of the superhero known as Time Trapper, who has seen all possible futures and knows how to defeat the dark god. The answer? The Justice League. But can he get to them in time? Return to Planet Hulk #1 by Greg Pak, Carlo Pagulayan Yep, one of the greatest superheroes, Hulk, is back on Sakaar, also known as Planet Hulk. He’s escaped the Red King, but now he has to fight his way off the planet through dangerous aliens and giant machines. Which prophecy will he fulfill? Sakaarson or World Breaker? Hero or villain? Rogue Storm #1 by Murewa Ayodele, Roland Boschi As part of the Age of Revelation crossover event, this alternate future paints Storm as the lone, vengeful goddess driven mad by magic and grief. Rogue has gathered her group of uncanny mutants with one goal: take down Storm. Can she do it? Can she find her old friend beneath all that pain? It’s hero vs hero in this great superhero comic. Super Creepshow #1 by Dan Watters, Carmine Di Giandomenico, Ryan Stegman, Riley Rossmo, Ed Brisson, Andrei Bressan First off, props for the Dark Knight Returns homage cover. In this one-off, three different creative teams tell three stories of one of Image Comics’ greatest superheroes: Creepshow. Funerals gone wrong, murder mysteries, and the wrong person getting a super soldier serum make for a fun trio of stories. White Tiger: Reborn #1 by Daniel Jose Older, Cynthia Pelayo, Moises Hidalgo This character is fresh off appearing in Daredevil Reborn, but not like this. Ava Ayala is the newest White Tiger, holding the amulet of power and seeking to protect her neighborhood. But a new mystery comes to the forefront, one that makes Ava confront her family’s past, including her dead brother Hector, the original White Tiger. Of course, there are so many great superhero comics series out there, many running for decades. What are your favorite superhero comics? What are you most excited about this month?
